Come learn about the basics of copyright and when to say ‘yes.’ Get hands-on experience crafting a fair use policy for your library in order to provide clarity for both employees and patrons. This will be a practical session. Attendees will work in small groups with a template to build a draft policy. Become the copyright expert at your library.

Kris’s down-to-earth, no fuss approach to communicating concerns and frustrations  resonates with those who relate to that pit of the stomach feeling when things go  sideways. Many of us are accustomed – especially in the workplace – to avoid conflict at  all costs. Some simply feel like it’s not worth the risk. Others just aren’t sure how and others don’t want to appear “negative.” In this highly interactive and humorous  presentation, Kris will empower participants to speak on purpose as well as provide clear  insightful steps to move tough conversations forward.

Free speech implies the freedom to be heard. Our opinions on ‘taking a knee’, allowing Ben Shapiro on campus, or even challenges of library materials are best served when we examine our prejudices and learn civil discourse. Carla Kelley, the Human Rights Education Center of Utah founder and executive director facilitates conversation on biases, challenges, and agreeing to disagree.

There is a national conversation around incorporation of games and gamification in education, but questions linger as to their implementation and acceptability. This workshop will further the conversation through activity rather than talk. Participants will leave this session with an understanding of serious games and gamification. Additionally, participants will learn and implement the Design Box, thereby calling themselves game designers.

The Salt Lake City Public Library recently embarked on a strategic planning process, and staff have learned how to gain a deeper understanding of user experiences with directed storytelling. Storytelling is a powerful tool to learn about patron experiences. In this workshop participants will learn techniques for interviewing and practice facilitating directed storytelling. The workshop will be highly interactive; come prepared to participate and meet your colleagues.
