Come learn about the basics of copyright and when to say ‘yes.’ Get hands-on experience crafting a fair use policy for your library in order to provide clarity for both employees and patrons. This will be a practical session. Attendees will work in small groups with a template to build a draft policy. Become the copyright expert at your library.

You'll pick up some hints, share experiences, and learn how to work shoulder-to-shoulder with your community to address needs. By doing so you can build support for your library, fill your programming space, and make meaningful and positive impacts in the communities you serve.

Join 2017 Newbery Award committee member Gene Nelson for a preconference on everything Newbery. Learn about the history of the oldest and most prestigious children’s book award in the world. Discuss the selection criteria and the processes of the deliberations of the committee. Discover the responses of the 2017 award winners and the important early Monday morning phone call that changes authors’ lives. Gene will also discuss the award winners and present his favorite 40 books of the year. Come for a fun filled afternoon full of insight into the awarding of the best book of the year.

In this highly interactive and energized presentation, Kris Boesch weaves valuable content, enlightening stories, and tangible tools to improve your library’s workplace culture. Whereas other programs miss the mark by only talking about employee “satisfaction” or “engagement,” Boesch takes workplace culture to a whole new level well beyond compensation, basic HR practices and “perks.” She unveils why emotional intimacy is the secret ingredient to the secret sauce of workplace culture. Participants will learn how to create collaboration, camaraderie and connection amongst their teams. This “glue” results in perseverance through tough times, inspiration to go the extra mile, and retention of top talent. Participants will be able to take her specific tangible no-cost ways to create an extraordinary workplace culture and implement them within their organizations to see immediate results.

Ally is the founder of the non-profit WriteOut Foundation, which runs writeoutcamp.org–a writing camp for teens that allows students to work with published authors, experience the outdoors, and enjoy other activities (plays, costume balls, rock climbing, and more). She lives with her husband and four children outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. She loves reading, writing, running, and listening to her husband play guitar.

Trying something new is tough, but self-directed achievement is an easy sell. It allows employees to take charge of their own learning with minimal cost to the library. In this session, we'll examine relevant research, share our own experience, and present helpful tools for getting staff (and management) excited about a development program in your own library. We’ll finish with a brainstorming session assisted by a panel of experts to jump start your own employee development program.
